How to make an E-Safety report
1. Determine the Type of Harm
eSafety reports can cover:
Cyberbullying (targeting children under 18)
Adult cyber abuse (serious online harm to adults)
Image-based abuse (non-consensual sharing of intimate images)
Illegal and restricted content (child sexual abuse, terrorist content)
Serious threats or harassment (on social media, gaming platforms, etc.)
2. Gather Evidence
Before reporting, collect:
Screenshots of the harmful content
URLs or direct links to the material
Any previous reports made to the platform
3. Report to the Platform First
eSafety requires you to first report harmful content to the platform (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok). If they don’t act within a reasonable time, you can escalate it.
4. Lodge a Complaint with eSafety
Go to the eSafety Commissioner’s website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/report
Then:
Click "Report abuse"
Select the category of harm
Fill out the online form with details and evidence
Submit your report
5. Follow Up
After submission, eSafety may:
Investigate and contact the platform
Request more evidence
Take enforcement action (e.g., content removal, fines for platforms)
